Can you take the LSAT online?

Not for most people anymore. Starting with the August 2026 test, LSAC requires almost everyone to take the multiple-choice LSAT in person at a Prometric test center. You can still test remotely if LSAC approves an exception, and the essay, LSAT Argumentative Writing, is always taken online. Prep, on the other hand, is almost all online.

Who can still test remotely

Wanting a different day or time isn’t a valid reason. If you’re approved, you can only book the Friday test day, and remote testing has stricter security, including a smartphone as a second camera and live human proctoring.

  • People in a US, US territory or Canada administration who live more than 180 miles or three hours’ drive from a test center with space.
  • People with certain disability-related accommodations, such as needing a separate room, that a test center can’t provide.
  • Active-duty military stationed abroad, and qualifying spouses and dependents.

How to ask for an exception

Distance requests go through the LSAT Status page in your JD Services account. You can send one from the day after registration closes until four days before test center scheduling closes. Accommodation requests have their own, earlier deadline.

LSAC doesn’t offer in-person testing in Quebec, because of the province’s Bill 96.

The essay is online for everyone

LSAT Argumentative Writing is taken online through LawHub, on your own computer, with remote proctoring. It opens eight days before each test. You get 15 minutes to analyze the prompt and 35 minutes to write. It isn’t scored, but law schools see it, and your LSAT score isn’t released until it’s done.

Online prep

Most LSAT prep happens online. LSAC’s own LawHub has four free official PrepTests, and LawHub Advantage adds the full library for $124 a year. Practicing there helps because it uses the same LawHub platform as the real test.

Online courses range from self-paced video lessons to live classes and one-on-one tutoring. Their October 2026 prices are on our where-to-learn page.
