How to sign up for the LSAT

You sign up in two steps. First you register for a test in your LSAC JD Services account and pay the $253 fee. Then, when your scheduling window opens, you book a day and time at a Prometric test center. As of October 2026, the next test you can still register for is January 2027, and its deadline is December 1, 2026.

Step by step

  1. Create or log in to your JD Services account on lsac.org.
  2. Pick a test and register before its registration deadline. Pay the $253 fee, or apply for a fee waiver first.
  3. If you need accommodations, request them in JD Services after you register. For most tests the deadline is the same as the registration deadline, with no exceptions.
  4. Turn on SMS messages in your account. LSAC texts and emails you when your scheduling window opens.
  5. When it opens, book your test center, day and time in Prometric’s scheduler. Slots go first come, first served, and people who registered earlier get earlier windows.
  6. Take LSAT Argumentative Writing online once it opens, eight days before your test, unless you already have a writing sample on file.

Who can take the LSAT

LSAC’s registration pages don’t list a minimum age or a degree you need first. You do have to accept the LSAC Candidate Agreement, and your ID name has to match your LSAC account exactly.

There are extra rules for a few people: anyone who has supervised or proctored the LSAT in the last 24 months, people who work for LSAC or an LSAT prep company, and relatives of LSAC staff. They need to tell LSAC before registering.

Registering in Canada works the same way and uses the same dates as the US. The one gap is Quebec, where LSAC doesn’t offer in-person testing because of Bill 96.

Changing or canceling

You can move to a different test date for free up to the registration deadline. After that it costs $153 for the first 7 days, then $253 up to the day before testing begins.

If the test goes badly, you can cancel your score within six calendar days of your test date. Score Preview lets you see your score first. Our score release page has the details.
