MCAT percentiles: what your score means

A 510 on the MCAT is at the 79th percentile, a 515 at the 91st and a 520 at the 97th. The average total is 500.6. Those numbers come from the AAMC’s percentile ranks in effect from May 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027, built from 305,494 scores in the 2023, 2024 and 2025 testing years. The AAMC doesn’t call any score good or bad. Each medical school decides what it looks for.

A percentile rank is the share of scores at or below yours. So a 508 at the 74th percentile means 74% of scores were 508 or lower. The AAMC updates this table every May 1, and your score report shows the rank that applies on the day you look.

There’s no official minimum. The closest thing to an answer is the AAMC’s MCAT and GPA grid above, which shows the share of applicants to US MD schools who got at least one acceptance, for the 2023-2024 to 2025-2026 cycles combined. Overall, 45.1% were accepted.

Both numbers count. With a 514-517, 77.2% of applicants with a GPA above 3.79 were accepted, against 56.5% of those with a GPA of 3.40-3.59. Look up what each school on your list says about the students it admits.

How many people take the MCAT, and how many pass?

Nobody passes or fails, because there’s no pass mark. The AAMC’s current percentile table is built from 305,494 scores over three testing years. That counts exams, not people, since some people test more than once. The AAMC pages we checked don’t give a yearly head count.
