Is there an official Mississippi CDL practice test?
Not as an online quiz. The official practice is in the CDL manual itself: each part ends with a short set of review questions, and the manual says that if you can’t answer them all, you should reread that part. Work through the general knowledge sections first, then only the sections for the tests on your list. Apps and websites sell CDL question banks too, and the where-to-learn page compares some of them.
Which CDL knowledge tests you take
Everyone takes the general knowledge test. The CDL manual lists the others, and you add the ones your license needs:
- Passenger transport, for bus drivers
- Air brakes, if your vehicle has air or air over hydraulic brakes
- Combination vehicles
- Hazardous materials, which also needs a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check
- Tank vehicles
- Doubles and triples
- School bus
Getting a Mississippi CDL learner’s permit
You bring the same documents as for any license: the signed application, your birth certificate, your Social Security number and two proofs of address. For a CLP you also need a valid medical examiner’s certificate (your medical card, valid for up to two years), and you pass the written exams for your class. The CLP is valid for 6 months, and you must hold it for 14 days before skills testing.
Training and the Mississippi CDL skills test
Since February 7, 2022, first-time applicants must finish entry-level driver training from a provider on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Training Provider Registry before some tests: the skills test for a first Class A or B license or an upgrade from B to A, the first passenger or school bus endorsement, and the first hazardous materials knowledge test. You can book the road test before the training, but it’s canceled if you haven’t finished by test day.
You schedule the skills test by phone with the CDL help desk at 601-487-7028, and you need a valid Mississippi license and a CLP for the same class. On the day, bring:
- Your CLP and the application you filled out for it
- Your medical card
- A licensed driver holding the same class or higher
- Proof of insurance and registration
- The license fee
- A vehicle for your class that can pass inspection
Cancel at least 48 hours ahead by calling the station. DPS also lists approved third-party testers.
CDL classes
- Class A: a combination of vehicles of 26,001 pounds or more, or one towing a vehicle rated 10,001 pounds or more
- Class B: a single vehicle of 26,001 pounds or more
- Class C: a single vehicle under 26,001 pounds that carries 16 or more people, including the driver, or hazardous materials that need placards
CDL fees
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Commercial learner’s permit, 6 months | $16 |
| Commercial driver’s license, 5 years | $55 |
| Each endorsement | $5 |
| Hazardous materials | $100 |
Lighter commercial vehicles, such as taxis and limousines, need a Class D license, which isn’t a CDL.
