Mississippi Class D license practice test and exam

In Mississippi, Class D is the light commercial license issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS), and the everyday license is Class R. You need Class D to drive a vehicle under 26,000 pounds commercially, such as a taxi, a limousine, a vehicle with a business logo or one carrying up to 15 passengers. It has its own Class D knowledge exam, so a Mississippi Class D license practice test should cover the manual’s Class D section as well as the rules every driver learns.

Class D or Class R: which one you need

Class R covers ordinary driving. You need Class D when you drive commercially in a vehicle that isn’t in Class A, B or C. A pickup truck doesn’t need a commercial license, whatever you use it for, unless it’s carrying enough hazardous materials to need a placard. Class D doesn’t need a medical card or a passenger endorsement. Heavier vehicles, buses for 16 or more people and placarded loads need a commercial driver’s license (CDL) instead.

What should a Mississippi Class D license practice test cover?

The manual’s Class D regulations run from page 83 to page 87 and cover company vehicles and trucks. Make sure your practice includes these rules:

  • Lights and reflectors: lights visible 500 feet behind, red reflectors at the rear and amber at the front
  • Warning devices: three flares or reflectors at night, set about 100 feet ahead of a stopped truck, 100 feet behind and beside it
  • Size limits: 8 1/2 feet wide, 13 1/2 feet high and 40 feet long for a single vehicle
  • Following distance: 300 feet behind another truck outside business and residential districts, unless you’re passing
  • Loads: covering sand, gravel and similar loads, and how far a load may stick out

DPS’s Class D page says the manual has Class D regulations and sample questions. The December 2024 edition has the regulations, but no set of sample questions, so plan to quiz yourself on the rules.
