Where to find a Mississippi state practice test

Start with the Mississippi Driver’s License Manual, because the knowledge exam is based on it. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) says it doesn’t have an app for studying for the permit exam, and its site has no online quiz, so any Mississippi state practice test you take comes from an app or website. Choose one written for Mississippi’s manual, and use it to find the rules you still need to reread.

Is there an official Mississippi state practice test?

No. DPS’s learner’s permit page says the state doesn’t currently have an app for studying for the permit exam, and the manual has no quiz or answer key. DPS’s advice is to read the manual carefully, since the computerized exam focuses on Mississippi traffic laws, safe-driving rules and license requirements.

Commercial drivers are the exception: DPS’s commercial driver’s license (CDL) manual has review questions after each part, and it says they may be on the test.

A study plan for the knowledge exam

  1. Read the whole manual once, from the license requirements at the front to the section on license suspension.
  2. Go back over signs, signals and pavement markings, which take up pages 25 to 40.
  3. Make a list of the numbers in the speed limit, school bus, railroad, parking and alcohol sections, and learn them.
  4. Use a Mississippi practice test from an app or website, and look up every rule you miss in the manual.
  5. If you’ll test with an interpreter, study the manual with that person beforehand, since on exam day they may only translate.

Choosing an app or website

Pick one set up for Mississippi, so its questions follow the Mississippi manual and not another state’s. Some apps and sites describe the real exam with a fixed number of questions and a pass mark. DPS doesn’t publish those numbers, so don’t plan around them. Check the price before you start a trial, since some app plans renew every week. Motorcycle and CDL tests are separate from the car exam.

Driver’s ed and practice behind the wheel

DPS lists certified driver’s education instructors by area, and public schools teach the course too. A certified course is required for a hardship license now and for every first license from July 1, 2027, as the drivers ed page explains. For the driving itself, DPS publishes the Model Mentor Guide for the adult who rides with you on your permit.
