The NJ motorcycle permit test and license

To ride a motorcycle in New Jersey you need a motorcycle endorsement on your license, or a separate Class E motorcycle license. Most riders start with a motorcycle permit, which means passing the MVC’s knowledge and vision tests, from age 17. There’s another route if you already have a basic license: an approved Basic Rider Course can waive the knowledge and road tests. You study from Chapter 10 of the NJ Driver Manual.

Getting the motorcycle permit

The MVC doesn’t publish a separate question count for the motorcycle knowledge test.

  1. Be at least 17. Under 18, you need a parent or guardian’s consent.
  2. Fill in a motorcycle permit application at an MVC Licensing Center and pass the 6 points of ID check.
  3. Pay the permit fee. The MVC’s fee page lists it at $5, as of October 2026.
  4. Pass the knowledge and vision tests. Study the Driver Manual and its motorcycle chapter.

Permit riding rules

  • No riding from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise
  • No passengers
  • No state toll roads or limited-access highways
  • Practice for at least 20 days before a road test. You no longer need another rider with you

Two routes to the endorsement

If you don’t have a car license yet, the course doesn’t waive the road test. You get a permit, practice for 6 months if you’re under 21 or 3 months if you’re 21 or older, take the course and the MVC road test, then hold a probationary motorcycle license for a year.

How to practice for the motorcycle knowledge test

Our 20 free questions are for the car test, but much of it overlaps, since the motorcycle test also draws on the Driver Manual. For motorcycle-specific questions, read Chapter 10 closely: preparing to ride, the SIPDE system, blind spots, following distance, dangerous surfaces, passengers and group riding. Several of the sites we compared, including DMV-Permit-Test.com and Driving-Tests.org, have free New Jersey motorcycle practice tests.
