The New Jersey Driver Manual

The New Jersey Driver Manual is the MVC’s official study guide, and every knowledge test question comes from it. It’s free as a PDF on the MVC website, in English, Spanish and seven other languages. The 2026 edition was revised in September 2025.

Download it free

The English PDF is large, about 45 MB, so download it on Wi-Fi. The motorcycle manual is inside it, as Chapter 10. The commercial (CDL) manual is a separate download on the same MVC page.

How to study it without getting lost

The manual is long, and the test is only 50 questions, so focus on the facts that come with numbers. New Jersey loves its distances: 25 feet from a school bus, 300 feet behind an emergency vehicle, 15 feet from a railroad crossing, 10 feet from a hydrant, 100 feet to signal a turn. Write those on a card.

Then learn the GDL rules for your own age, because questions on curfews, decals and passengers come up a lot. Finish with the MVC’s sample test and a few practice tests. Aim well above 40 out of 50 before you book.

For parents: the Share the Keys guide

The MVC also publishes a free teen driver guide, Share the Keys, in English and Spanish. It explains the GDL rules for families and includes a log for the 50 supervised hours. One catch: the MVC only accepts form BA-CSD as proof of those hours, not the log page in the guide.
