Booking an NJ MVC appointment: permit, knowledge test, road test and REAL ID

Almost everything at the New Jersey MVC is by appointment, and you book it on the MVC’s official site, TeleGov. That covers your permit, the knowledge test, the road test and a REAL ID. You can also book a road test in person at a driver testing center, but not by phone, and nobody else can book for you. Walk-ins are only for a few things, like getting your permit validated or buying red decals.

How to schedule your road test

Road test centers are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, and only test by appointment. Some double as licensing centers, so you can get your license on the spot if you pass. Those locations take credit cards only, no cash.

  1. Pass the knowledge and vision tests so your permit is validated.
  2. Go to the MVC’s TeleGov site and choose the road test option.
  3. Pick a road test center and a date that falls after your supervised driving period: 6 months if you’re under 21, 3 months if you’re 21 or older.
  4. Use the months in between to finish your practice. Under 21, that’s at least 50 hours, 10 of them after dark, signed off on form BA-CSD.
  5. On the day, bring your permit, your 6 points of ID, an accompanying driver and a car that passes the MVC’s checks.

Can’t find a slot?

For REAL ID, the MVC says new appointments open every morning on a rolling basis, so check early and check often. The same habit helps for road tests.

Don’t pay anyone who offers to get you an appointment. The MVC says only it can schedule appointments, it checks your ID against the booking, and any site that isn’t a .gov address may be a scam.

What you can do without an appointment

Licensing Centers are open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, as of October 2026.

  • Get your permit validated
  • Buy red GDL decals
  • Pick up your probationary license after you pass the road test, at any Licensing Center
