The New Jersey road test

The NJ road test is a short drive, about 10 to 15 minutes, with an MVC examiner in the passenger seat. It comes after the written knowledge test and your supervised practice: at least 6 months if you’re under 21, or 3 months if you’re 21 or older. You book it on the MVC’s TeleGov site and bring your own car. Searching for the “written driving test”? That’s the 50-question knowledge test, which you pass first.

Road test requirements

  • A validated permit, legible and not laminated
  • The same 6 points of ID you used for your permit, as originals
  • Under 21: at least 6 months of supervised driving and 50 hours, 10 after dark, with a completed form BA-CSD
  • 21 or older: at least 3 months of supervised driving
  • A licensed driver who comes with you. They must be at least 21 and have held a New Jersey license for at least 3 years
  • Two red GDL decals on the plates, if you’re under 21

What the examiner checks

Manual transmissionYou’ll be asked to show you can shift gears

The test is in an off-road test area or on a public road course. The MVC lists these skills:

  • Driving in reverse, about 100 feet in a straight line
  • Parallel parking
  • Turning around
  • Stopping at signs, and stopping smoothly
  • Approaching corners and intersections
  • Yielding right-of-way
  • Steering, turning and using the horn
  • Sitting properly, with your seat belt on

The car you bring

The MVC doesn’t lend cars, and a lot of tests end before they start because of the vehicle. Check yours against this list:

  • Registered, insured and with a valid inspection sticker. Bring the registration and insurance cards
  • Working signals, brake lights and wipers, safe tires and good brakes
  • The examiner must be able to reach the foot brake or a parking brake to the right of the driver
  • No tinted front side windows, no cracked glass, both mirrors in place
  • A reasonably clean inside, and doors and windows that open from inside
  • Not self-parking, and not an autocycle
  • A rental only if you’re named as a driver on the rental agreement

If you pass

The MVC doesn’t publish a list of the most common reasons people fail. The best preparation is the skills list above. Practice reversing straight, parallel parking and full stops behind the line until they feel boring.

  1. The examiner endorses your permit.
  2. Take your permit and your 6 points of ID to a Licensing Center. Some road test sites can issue it on the spot. You don’t need an appointment.
  3. You get a probationary license and drive unsupervised for at least a year, with the GDL rules if you’re under 21.
  4. After that year, and once you’re 18, upgrade online to a basic license.
