Taking the NJ knowledge test in Spanish or another language

Yes, you can take the New Jersey knowledge test in Spanish. As of October 2026 the MVC offers the written test in English plus 12 other languages, and an oral version with headphones in English and Spanish. The NJ Driver Manual is free in Spanish too. The road test is different: only you and the examiner can be in the car, so no interpreter can ride along.

Languages for the written test

English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Hindi, Albanian and Turkish. The oral test, for people who can’t read in any of these, is in English or Spanish.

If your language isn’t on the list, ask for a state-contracted interpreter when you book your permit appointment. The MVC arranges and pays for them, but it usually takes four to six weeks. Deaf and hard of hearing applicants can test with an MVC-approved interpreter, also paid by the MVC.

The driver manual in nine languages

The MVC publishes the manual in English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Haitian-Creole, Korean, Tagalog, Gujarati and Portuguese. Some of these aren’t test languages (Haitian-Creole, Tagalog and Gujarati), so you could study in one language and test in another, or ask for an interpreter.

At the MVC office and on the road test

At a Licensing Center you can ask for Language Link, the MVC’s phone interpreting service, or bring your own interpreter for the counter. Documents that aren’t in English need a certified translation.

On the road test, only you and the MVC examiner are in the car. The examiner gives directions as you drive, so practice following spoken directions like turn left, pull over and back up before your test day.
