The New Mexico Driver Manual

The Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) posts the New Mexico Driver Manual free as a PDF, in English and in Spanish, and lists it as the material to study for the knowledge test. Its numbered pages run to 39, starting with the permit and license stages and ending with a section on motorcycles. There are no sample questions in it, so pair the New Mexico driver manual with MVD’s practice app.

Using it as your New Mexico driving test study guide

MVD calls the manual and its practice app the materials to study for the knowledge test. The exam draws on the same rules, so read the whole manual, not only the signs.

A few parts are older than the rules that apply now. The phone section says only that some towns ban hand-held phones. For permit and provisional license holders, though, MVD counts using a mobile communication device while driving as a traffic violation that adds 30 days to the time you hold your permit or license. Driver education hours and the None for the Road class aren’t in the manual at all.

The Spanish manual and the commercial license manuals

The Spanish edition is called Guía para conducir de Nuevo México, and it’s on the same MVD page as the English one. For a commercial driver’s license (CDL), MVD posts a separate CDL manual and a two-page New Mexico addendum with the license classes, endorsements and test rules. MVD doesn’t post a separate motorcycle manual; the car manual ends with its motorcycle section.
