None for the Road: New Mexico’s DWI awareness class

If you’re 18 to 24 and getting your first New Mexico license, you must finish None for the Road, a self-study class on driving while intoxicated (DWI). The University of New Mexico’s continuing education division (UNM Continuing Education) runs it, not the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). New Mexico None for the Road starts with a $25 study guide and a practice exam you do at home, and ends with the DWI Awareness final exam, which you take at an MVD field office.

Who has to take New Mexico’s None for the Road class?

  • Everyone 18 to 24 getting a first New Mexico license. MVD asks for the certificate of completion, whenever you finished it
  • Anyone 25 or older getting a first New Mexico license who has ever been convicted of DWI. You can use None for the Road, another approved DWI prevention and education program or another state’s equivalent

Under 18, you don’t take it. Your driver education course has its own DWI hours instead.

How the New Mexico DWI test works

  1. Buy the study guide for $25: online with a credit card at nonefortheroad.org, or by mailing the request form with a money order to UNM Continuing Education. Personal checks aren’t accepted.
  2. Work through the guide and finish its practice exam.
  3. Note your payment verification number. Online, it appears once you finish the guide’s practice exam; in the printed guide, it’s on page 13.
  4. Take that number to your local MVD field office and pass the DWI Awareness final exam.
  5. Bring your None for the Road certificate of completion when you apply for your license.

Spanish, libraries and help

The workbook also comes in Spanish, as Ni una para el camino, with its own request form. The request forms list libraries where you can borrow the optional video, with one version for Albuquerque and one for the rest of the state. MVD field offices also have None for the Road brochures and applications.

UNM Continuing Education gives these phone numbers on its program page, staffed 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday:

Are None for the Road answers posted anywhere?

No. Neither MVD nor UNM Continuing Education publishes the final exam’s questions or answers. The study guide’s practice exam is the way to check you’re ready, and UNM says the class informs drivers about DWI laws and prevention. The driver manual’s alcohol section, with the .08% and .02% limits, is useful background too.
