AANP certification: the AANPCB exams

It comes from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), which does business as the Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (NPCB). People call it AANP certification after the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), but AANPCB says it’s a separate organization from that membership group. Members of AANP and the American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners (AAENP) do pay less. AANPCB gives four nurse practitioner (NP) exams: family (FNP), adult-gerontology primary care (AGNP), psychiatric mental health (PMHNP) and emergency (ENP).

Which AANP certification exams are there?

Each exam leads to its own credential:

  • FNP, for care of families and individuals across the lifespan. Credential: FNP-C.
  • AGNP, for adolescents to older adults. Credential: AGNP-C.
  • PMHNP, for psychiatric mental health care across the lifespan. Credential: PMHNP-C.
  • ENP, a specialty exam for emergency care. Credential: ENP-C.

You need FNP certification before the ENP exam, from AANPCB or another national board. Then you qualify in one of two ways: 2,000 hours of emergency care as a certified NP plus 100 hours of emergency continuing education in the past five years, or an ENP academic program.

What AANPCB charges

These are AANPCB’s own fees. AAENP membership earns the member price on the ENP exam.

Forgot your membership number? Email it to AANPCB within 30 days of applying. Prometric sets its own fees for moving a booked seat: nothing 30 or more days ahead, $50 from 5 to 29 days ahead, and the full test delivery fee inside 5 days or for a missed or late appointment.

How do you apply for AANP certification?

You apply in your AANPCB online profile:

  1. Create an NPCB online profile with your legal first and last name. AANPCB passes it to Prometric, and it must match your identification on test day.
  2. Choose your exam, upload your transcript and registered nurse license, and pay.
  3. Watch your profile for missing items. An application stays on hold until everything is in.
  4. Once you’re approved and your program completion date arrives, AANPCB emails your eligibility to test.
  5. Book with Prometric from your profile. There are no set exam dates: you take any open seat inside your window.

Prometric has test centers worldwide. If you’re deployed or can’t find one near you, AANPCB asks you to email it about other options.

Results and passing score

You see a preliminary pass or fail on screen the moment you finish. It becomes official once AANPCB has checked your eligibility and documents and released your result.

AANPCB sets its passing score with a recognized standard-setting method and doesn’t report scores as a percentage of correct answers. If you don’t pass, your score letter appears in your account within 3 to 5 business days. AANPCB doesn’t report failures to state boards of nursing.

If you pass, AANPCB mails a wall certificate within 3 weeks of releasing your certification, and your wallet card is in your account.

Retaking an AANPCB exam

You can reapply after your official score notice arrives by email, with a re-exam application and payment. The AGNP, PMHNP and ENP exams allow two attempts per calendar year. The eligibility rules in force when you reapply are the ones that count.

The AGNP blueprint from January 1, 2027

From January 1, 2027, the AGNP exam’s 135 scored items are split differently. AANPCB’s AGNP Candidate Handbook drops the separate patient age domain from that date and spreads items across adolescents, young adults, middle adults and older adults.
