FNP practice questions from the boards

The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) both sell timed practice tests written for their own exams, and ANCC posts a free set of sample questions. For larger banks of family nurse practitioner (FNP) practice questions, review companies sell their own.

  • $85Each ANCC Readiness Test session

Where can you get official FNP practice questions?

AANPCB sells practice exams through your AANPCB account. Each has 50 questions and a 60-minute limit, written by nurse practitioner content experts to the exam’s blueprint. Scores come as a percentage, not scaled like the real exam, and stay confidential.

You can take each exam you buy once, but you can buy more than one. Besides the FNP ones, AANPCB has three for its adult-gerontology primary care exam, three for emergency and two for psychiatric mental health.

ANCC’s Readiness Tests

A Readiness Test has 60 questions in 75 minutes, drawn from the domains of the exam’s test content outline. You take it at a Prometric center or at home with a live remote proctor, and about an hour later you get an email with your number right in each domain.

There’s no eligibility rule, but you have to book at least a day ahead. To change or cancel, do it by the second calendar day before your appointment.

Free FNP sample questions from ANCC

ANCC’s FNP sample questions page isn’t timed, and you can take it again whenever you like. The answers come after the last question. ANCC says the questions are like the exam’s but don’t cover its full range of content or difficulty.

Question banks from review companies

APEA’s MyQBank is one example: each bank has 800 questions with rationales, and its Management bank follows the specialty exams’ blueprints. You build practice tests by body system, testing domain, missed questions or new ones. Prices are in the study options table.

Using practice tests well

Take the boards’ own warnings into account:

  • AANPCB says its practice exam doesn’t predict a pass or fail and isn’t meant as a study guide or as your sole source.
  • ANCC says its Readiness Test isn’t an exact prediction either.
  • Exam content is confidential. AANPCB’s handbook bars copying, sharing or discussing it before, during or after the exam.
