FNP review course options and official study guides

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) says you don’t have to use any prep materials to sit its exams, and it doesn’t endorse any. If you want one, a family nurse practitioner (FNP) review course comes in several formats. Start with the free study guides from ANCC and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), then pick the format that suits how you learn.

Official study guides from the boards

AANPCB ends each candidate handbook with that exam’s blueprint. It also posts reference lists, the sources its exams are written from: one for the emergency exam, one shared by the family and adult-gerontology exams, and one for psychiatric mental health.

ANCC’s outline for each exam lists the knowledge and skills its latest role delineation study found important, with the number of questions in each area.

What ANCC’s FNP outline covers

The outline splits 150 scored questions into five domains:

Diagnosis2517%

Implementation5033%
Evaluation2013%

The shares don’t add to 100% because of rounding.

How do you choose an FNP review course?

Match the format to your situation:

  • Want a set date and a teacher: a two-day live class, in person or over video. Both companies run one.
  • Exam date not fixed, or you work shifts: an on-demand course. Fitzgerald’s gives 180 days of access.
  • Mostly want to test yourself: a question bank, bought by subscription.
  • On a budget: book early. APEA’s lower price is for 6 or more weeks ahead, and Fitzgerald lists early bird prices for its live courses.

Check what happens if you don’t pass. APEA’s guarantee gives a free repeat course after its live review, but you must finish its supplemental material before your exam and claim it within a year of the course.

A simple study path

This order is our suggestion, not an official one:

  1. Download your board’s blueprint or outline and its reference list.
  2. Decide whether you need a review course, and in which format.
  3. Try a practice test from your board partway through.
  4. Book your exam early in your testing window.
