NPTE registration: from FSBPT account to Prometric seat

You register for the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) online with the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT), but you can’t book a seat until you’re approved for the state where you want a license. NPTE registration has three parts: an application to that state’s board, registering and paying with FSBPT, and a Prometric appointment once your Authorization to Test (ATT) letter arrives. Each sitting has its own deadlines, and missing one moves you to the next date.

  • 31States where FSBPT can approve you
  • Up to 90 daysBefore graduation you can test
  • About a weekFrom pay deadline to approval deadline

How does NPTE registration work?

  1. Find out what your jurisdiction requires. FSBPT notes that some states want a jurisprudence exam, a test on the state’s physical therapy laws, before the NPTE.
  2. Get your FSBPT account ready. If you’re graduating from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), your school creates your profile and you complete it. Otherwise, request a profile through the survey on FSBPT’s Customer Login page and allow three business days.
  3. Apply for a license with your state board, on its own form and with its own fees.
  4. Register and pay for the NPTE in your FSBPT dashboard, using the NPTE button in the green Services area. FSBPT takes Visa, MasterCard or Discover.
  5. Get approved. Your board, or FSBPT in a state that uses its Alternate Approval Pathway, makes you eligible, and FSBPT then emails your ATT letter.
  6. Book your Prometric appointment through the Scheduling links on your dashboard as soon as the letter arrives.

FSBPT’s Journey Map, at pt.fsbpt.net, builds this list for your own school and state and shows who is responsible for each step.

Who approves you: your board or FSBPT

Under the Alternate Approval Pathway (AAP), graduates of CAPTE-accredited programs are approved for the NPTE by FSBPT instead of the state board. FSBPT says 31 states use it, and that candidates there can typically schedule with Prometric one day after registering. You still have to send your state a full license application to get licensed.

Everywhere else, and for anyone who didn’t attend a CAPTE-accredited program, the state board approves you. Boards often want a license application, academic records, an application fee or other documents first. If your status says “Awaiting Eligibility”, FSBPT is waiting for the state; if you’re not sure your file is complete, contact the board.

Who can register for the NPTE

  • You’re at least 18.
  • You have a degree for the exam level from a CAPTE-accredited program, or an education a recognized credentialing agency has found substantially equivalent.
  • You don’t already have an open registration at the same exam level.
  • You have no open security investigation, and you’ve completed any FSBPT sanctions.
  • You’re within FSBPT’s attempt limits, and the board where you want a license approves you.

Students at CAPTE-accredited programs can register once the school validates that they’re on track to graduate, and can test up to 90 days before graduation, though some jurisdictions are stricter. Graduates of other programs can register at any time, but every jurisdiction has to approve them, so FSBPT asks them to contact the board first.

Booking Prometric and finding an NPTE testing center

Your ATT letter gives your testing window, the fee you’ll pay Prometric and your name as Prometric has it. You pay Prometric when you book, by Visa, MasterCard or direct debit from a checking account, and you must test within the window on the letter.

You can use any Prometric center that offers the NPTE, whichever state you registered for. Centers fill up, so book early and keep checking Prometric’s live seat availability if your first choice is full. If you can’t find a seat within 250 miles of where you want to test, contact FSBPT Exam Services.

Changing your date, withdrawing or missing the exam

  • To cancel, do both steps: cancel your Prometric appointment, then withdraw from the exam in your FSBPT dashboard. Cancelling with Prometric alone doesn’t cancel your registration.
  • You can only move your Prometric appointment within the window on your ATT letter.
  • You can withdraw until the window ends, and choose a refund or put the fee toward a later sitting. After the window closes you lose the whole fee.
  • If you don’t show up, or are turned away for ID problems, you’re a no-show. A no-show doesn’t count against your attempt limits, and you can still withdraw before the window ends.
  • FSBPT makes no exceptions for illness. If you’re sick on exam day, withdraw to get part of your fee back.

Testing accommodations

If you have a disability covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), say so when you register. Accommodations are decided case by case and may include extra time, a reader or scribe, a separate room or ZoomText. Who reviews your request depends on your state: FSBPT does it for these states, and for every other jurisdiction you ask your licensing board instead.

Checking your NPTE status and contacting FSBPT

Log in to your Customer Dashboard and look at NPTE Registration Status; Registration Details shows what’s done and what’s still outstanding. If you’ve lost your FSBPT ID, the login page can send it to you once your name, date of birth and email match FSBPT’s records.

FSBPT Exam Services is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time, on 703-739-9420 or at ExamRegistration@fsbpt.org.
