Oklahoma pesticide applicator license

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) keeps certification and licensing apart. You earn certification with a closed-book core exam and a category exam at a Pearson VUE test center, but an Oklahoma pesticide applicator license for business is held by the company, and your certification card alone isn’t a license to do pesticide work.

  • 70%Score to pass each exam
  • 75 minutesTime for a 50-question exam

Oklahoma certifications and licenses

  • Certified applicator: your certification card, by category.
  • Commercial business license: pesticide work for hire or compensation.
  • Noncommercial business license: includes government employees on official duties.
  • Service technician: an employee of a licensed company, with an ID card. Technicians retest instead of earning credits.
  • Private applicator license: every farmer applying a restricted use pesticide to their crops.

How do you get an Oklahoma pesticide applicator license?

  1. Order study materials from Oklahoma State University (OSU) Central Mailing Service, or private packets from many county extension offices.
  2. Book with Pearson VUE online or by phone at least 48 hours ahead. Walk-ins aren’t accepted.
  3. Pass the core exam first. You then have a year to pass a category exam. Categories 11b, 12a and 12b have 25 questions in 50 minutes.
  4. Categories 7a General Pest, 7b Structural and 7c Fumigation also need a practical at OSU in Stillwater within 12 months.
  5. Private applicators and service technicians take their own exam without the core.

Recertification on a five-year schedule

Each category recertifies on a fixed five-year schedule, not from the date you were certified. Each cycle ends December 31 of its fifth year, as ODAFF’s CEU table shows, and recertification opens September 1 of that year. Category totals run from 5 to 20 continuing education units (CEUs), prorated if you join late; private applicators need 20. CEUs earned in the year you’re certified don’t count. You can retest for $92 instead.

Business licenses run October 1 to September 30 for company names starting with a number or A to L, and January 1 to December 31 for M to Z.
