Is there a Rhode Island motorcycle permit?
The DMV’s motorcycle page says it doesn’t issue motorcycle permits. Its permit fee table lists a motorcycle permit at $28.50, and its locations page lists motorcycle permits among branch and AAA services, so ask the DMV before you pay for one.
How do you get a Rhode Island motorcycle license?
From the DMV’s motorcycle page:
- Hold a valid Rhode Island driver’s license
- Finish a motorcycle safety course with CCRI
- Take the CCRI certificate and your license to any DMV branch
- Get the endorsement added, for two wheels, three wheels or both
If you already hold a motorcycle license in another state, that endorsement transfers when you move your license to RI.
Two wheels or three
From March 1, 2022, CCRI courses and certificates are for either two-wheel or three-wheel motorcycles, and the endorsement shows which:
- No restriction: two or three wheels
- Restriction Q: two wheels only
- Restriction W: three wheels only
Scooters, autocycles and mopeds that fit the state law’s definitions don’t need a special license. Electric bicycles aren’t registered.
Helmet and gear rules
The Driver’s Manual says riders under 21 must always wear a certified helmet, and so must passengers. Every operator also wears an approved helmet for the first year of the license, whatever their age. Every operator must wear eye protection: glasses, goggles or a face shield.
