The Rhode Island Driver’s Manual

The Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) tells you to study the entire Rhode Island Driver’s Manual for the knowledge exam, and the manual says it covers what’s on the exam and the driving skills test. You can download it as a PDF, and the DMV also posts an online version split into chapters, with the testing material highlighted.

Which chapters of the Rhode Island driver’s manual are on the test?

The DMV’s manuals page marks these as testing material:

  • Important Messages
  • II, Distractions, drowsiness and emotions
  • III, Basic driving skills and safety rules
  • IV, Signals and roadway markings
  • V, Driving emergencies
  • VI, Motorcycles
  • VII, Safe, courteous and defensive driving
  • VIII, Sharing the road safely
  • IX, Laws you must know
  • X, Drinking, drugs and driving
  • XI, In case of a collision
  • XII, When stopped by a law enforcement officer
  • XIII, Equipment you must inspect
  • XVII, Appendices

Chapter I, on applying for a license, chapter XV, on the driver skills test, and the organ donor and closing chapters aren’t marked. They’re worth reading before the road test too.

Pages worth marking

The where-to-learn page has a study plan. These parts are worth a bookmark too:

  • The fine schedule at the end of chapter IX
  • The penalty tables by age in chapter X
  • What to do after a collision, in chapter XI
  • Appendix G, the identity and address documents the DMV accepts

How to use it

The manual is a study guide, not a legal document, and it says so. For changes in laws, fees and procedures, it sends you to the DMV’s website and the state’s law site. It doesn’t print the fees either. Each time, it sends you to the DMV’s fee table, so check that before you pay.

A few rules on the DMV’s web pages differ from the manual, such as how long an under-18 permit lasts and the youngest age for a full license. The permit and provisional license pages set out both.

Other manuals

Commercial drivers study the Commercial Driver License Manual, and the DMV’s commercial permit page links it. Motorcycle riders take a course with the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), and the manual’s chapter VI covers what car drivers should know about motorcycles.
