SHSAT ELA: scrambled paragraphs and what the section tests now

The English Language Arts (ELA) section of the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) has 50 questions in three parts: Reading Comprehension, and Revising/Editing Parts A and B. SHSAT scrambled paragraphs aren’t among them. Neither NYC’s guide for 2027 admissions nor the one for 2026 admissions lists a scrambled paragraphs or logical reasoning part.

Are scrambled paragraphs on the SHSAT?

No. The guide for the fall 2026 test names the parts as Reading Comprehension, Revising/Editing Parts A and B, Math Fill in the Blanks and Math Multiple Choice. If a book or website has SHSAT scrambled paragraphs or logical reasoning practice, it’s for parts NYC’s current guide doesn’t list.

Reading Comprehension

You read literary and informational texts: poetry, adventure stories, historical and science fiction, myths and mysteries, and also essays, speeches, biographies, memoirs, journalism and scientific or historical accounts. Questions ask about things like central idea, word choice, supporting evidence and how a text is organized. NYC’s guide says to answer from the text and its images or graphics only, not from what you already know.

Revising/Editing Part A

You read a text with numbered sentences and decide how to improve it. The text may have:

  • language misuse
  • missing or unnecessary supporting details
  • missing or poor transitions
  • a missing or unclear introduction or conclusion
  • confusing or illogical organization

Revising/Editing Part B

Part B tests conventions of language and punctuation, based on the Language section of the New York State Next Generation ELA standards for Grade 7 and earlier. You read a sentence, a list of sentences or a short paragraph, then choose the best correction, find the sentence with an error, or combine or revise sentences.

Tools in the ELA section

The digital test has a highlighter, an answer eliminator, a notepad that keeps your notes across the ELA section, a pencil for drawing on passages, a line reader mask and a bookmark for questions you want to revisit within a passage set. Underlined words with a dotted line open a pop-up definition.
