SHSAT schools: the Specialized High Schools in New York City

Eight of New York City’s nine Specialized High Schools admit students by their score on the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) alone, and those eight are the SHSAT schools. The ninth, LaGuardia High School, admits by audition and doesn’t use the SHSAT at all.

The school code is the District Borough Number (DBN) that New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) uses.

Specialized High Schools by borough

Going by the addresses above, there are two in Brooklyn (Brooklyn Tech and Brooklyn Latin), two in the Bronx (Bronx Science and American Studies at Lehman), two in Manhattan (Stuyvesant and the High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering) and one on Staten Island. Queens has Queens High School for the Sciences at York College. NYCPS says the SHSAT is the only criterion these eight schools use for admission, so where you live in the city plays no part.

How do you choose SHSAT schools?

You rank the testing schools when you register for the SHSAT, and you’re only considered for the schools you list. Offers then follow your score and that order. Each school’s website and MySchools are the places NYCPS points to for learning about them.

LaGuardia: the audition school

Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts combines conservatory-level arts training with college-preparatory academics. You apply with a portfolio and auditions for up to six studios: Dance, Drama, Fine & Visual Art, Instrumental Music, Technical Theater and Vocal Music. Each studio scores its auditions, so you can get an offer from more than one studio.

To get a LaGuardia offer you also need a final grade of at least 65, or the equivalent, in English, math, science and social studies from the previous school year.
