Virginia · Permit test

Can you take the Virginia permit test online?

No, you can't take the Virginia knowledge exam at home. It's given on a computer at a DMV customer service center, or in class at a high school that's part of the DMV's remote testing program. What you can do online is study with the DMV's free study guide and sample questions, start your application, and handle many other license tasks.

Testing at school instead of the DMV

Some public and private high schools run the DMV knowledge exam in a school computer lab, with a staff member as proctor. You get your result right away, and if you pass you get a testing receipt. You take that receipt to a customer service center to finish your permit.

Ask your school whether it takes part. Schools can join for free by contacting DMV.

Online practice

The DMV's interactive study guide walks through each section of the Driver's Manual with practice questions, in English or Spanish. There's a separate one for the motorcycle manual. Practicing online doesn't count toward anything. The real exam is always proctored.

What else the VA DMV does online

  • Start a driver's license or permit application before your visit.
  • Renew or replace a license or ID card, if you're eligible.
  • Change your address, which you must do within 30 days of moving.
  • Request your driving record and check your points balance.
  • Book or cancel an appointment.
  • Log in to your DMV account to see your records and past transactions.
