Replacing a lost, stolen or damaged license
- Use the online replacement on DMV's site. You'll sign in to your DMV account on the next page. Some people aren't eligible online and need to visit an office.
- Check your address. The post office won't forward a license, and you must tell DMV within 30 days if you move.
- Pay the $20 replacement fee by card or bank account. A replacement learner's permit is $2.
- Print your receipt and carry it until the new card arrives. Allow at least 15 days before contacting DMV.
Renewing your license
- You can renew online unless your last renewal was online or by mail, or your license is suspended or revoked.
- If you can't renew online, go to a customer service center. That's also where you get a new photo.
- A standard license costs $4 a year, $32 for eight years. Allow 15 days for it to arrive.
- If 15 days or fewer are left on your license, the printed online receipt plus your old license extends it for up to 30 days.
Your license number
Virginia doesn't put your Social Security number on your license. DMV gives you a customer number instead, and that's the number on your card. If you can't find it, sign in to your DMV account or call (804) 497-7100. DMV can only discuss your own record.
Upgrading to REAL ID at the same time
Online replacements and renewals reuse your old photo and can't add REAL ID. For REAL ID, start the application online and then visit a customer service center with your documents.
