Taking the Virginia permit test in Spanish or another language

Yes, you can take the Virginia knowledge exam in Spanish. The car, motorcycle and CDL exams are offered in 26 languages in all, including ASL, and the Driver's Manual and online study guide come in Spanish. Because the languages are built into the exam, you can't bring a translator for it.

Languages the exam comes in

As of October 2026: English, American Sign Language, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese/Mandarin (simplified and traditional), Dari, Farsi, French, German, Haitian Creole, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Kurdish, Mongolian, Nepali, Pashto, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Twi (Akan), Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese.

There's also an audio version, and you can ask for an oral exam at any customer service center. The CDL hazmat exam is English only.

Studying in Spanish

  • El Manual de Conductor de Virginia (DMV 39S), the Spanish Driver's Manual.
  • The Guía de Estudio, the interactive study guide with practice questions in Spanish.
  • DMV's Spanish page, ¿Habla Español?, which gathers these in one place.

The road test in another language

The road skills test itself is given in English. Since September 30, 2024, you can bring a translator or ASL interpreter who is at least 18 and holds a U.S. license. They may only translate the examiner's instructions, and DMV doesn't provide one.
