Where to find a West Virginia DMV practice permit test

Start with the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Sample Driver’s Test page and the Driver’s Licensing Handbook. DMV says the sample questions aren’t the actual test questions; they’re taken from state law and the handbook. For a West Virginia DMV practice permit test with more questions, apps and websites from other companies add timed tests and explanations, but their tests are their own.

  • At least 25Questions on the real knowledge test
  • 19Right answers you need to pass
  • Pages 34 to 41Signs, signals and markings in the handbook

Is there an official West Virginia DMV practice permit test?

Yes, in the form of DMV’s Sample Driver’s Test page: 20 multiple-choice study questions with an answer key and a few tips for the driving test. DMV calls it a study guide and says the questions aren’t the real ones. The handbook itself has no question bank, and DMV doesn’t publish its test questions.

Know to Drive, DMV’s online testing service, isn’t practice. It’s the real knowledge test taken at home, and it counts as part of your license application.

A study plan for the knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook from Chapter I to Chapter IX. The test covers traffic rules, regulations, signs and markings.
  2. Spend extra time on Chapter V, the signs, signals and pavement markings.
  3. Write down the numbers: speed limits, parking distances, following distances, the blood alcohol limits and the insurance minimums.
  4. Answer the questions on DMV’s Sample Driver’s Test page, then check every one you miss against the handbook.
  5. Add an app or website if you want more timed practice.

Choosing an app or website

Pick one built for West Virginia, so the questions follow the Driver’s Licensing Handbook and not another state’s rules. A good check is whether it describes the real test the way the handbook does: at least 25 questions, 19 right to pass, with a time limit.

Zutobi and DMV Genie sell subscriptions in the App Store, so check the plan and price before a free trial ends.

Studying for a West Virginia commercial driver’s license (CDL)

The car handbook doesn’t cover commercial tests. DMV posts a separate CDL Manual (revised 08/2023), and you need at least 80% on the CDL knowledge test. If you fail a part, you wait seven days to retest.

Since December 17, 2025, the steps are:

  1. Apply online. DMV emails your CDL test card, generally within 24 hours.
  2. Take the knowledge test at a regional office.
  3. Hold the commercial learner’s permit (CLP) for at least 14 days.
  4. Take the road skills test with a third-party examiner.

The testing fee is $25 for the general knowledge, air brake and combination tests, plus standard licensing fees. The 2023 manual lists $32.50 in all, including the $7.50 duplicate license fee, for three tries. Each endorsement adds $10.

Motorcycle permit test

The motorcycle permit has its own 25-question test, and you need 80% to pass. The age rules, the skills test and the rider course are on the motorcycle course’s state page.
