ADC Melbourne: the office, the exam centre and written exam venues

The Australian Dental Council (ADC) has its office and its examination centre at the same address: Level 6, 469 La Trobe Street, Melbourne VIC 3000. Every ADC practical exam, for every profession, is held at the Melbourne centre, so you travel to ADC Melbourne whichever country you live in. The written exam is different. Dentists sit it at Pearson VUE test centres around the world, and the other professions in Melbourne or one of six overseas hubs.

What happens at the Melbourne exam centre

The ADC built the centre for the practical exam. It runs the practical exam for every profession there, and some written exams for dental prosthetists, dental hygienists, dental therapists and oral health therapists. On the ADC’s exam centre page there are two videos, a walkthrough of the practical exam and a tour of the centre.

On exam days you register at reception on Level 6, put your belongings in a locker and wait in the candidate lounge, which has a kitchen, bathrooms and a quiet room. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) records video and audio in every common and assessment area. The practical exam page has what to bring.

Where dentists sit the written exam

Pearson VUE runs the written exam for dentists at its test centres, and its ADC page has a search for venues. In the ADC’s 2024/25 financial year, candidates sat it at more than 113 venues in 33 countries, Australia included. Some venues have limited seats, given in the order bookings come in, and venues can change at short notice. If centres near you are full, you may have to travel to another country to sit it.

Written exam hubs for the other professions

Since March 2026, dental hygienists, dental therapists, oral health therapists and dental prosthetists can sit the written exam in Melbourne or at one of six hubs:

  • Toronto, Canada
  • London, England
  • Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Singapore
  • Sao Paulo, Brazil
  • Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

You choose a hub after you register for the exam. The practical exam for these professions is still only held in Melbourne.
