The ADC practical exam

Two days at the Australian Dental Council (ADC) Examination Centre in Melbourne: a technical skills day of six tasks on manikins, and a clinical skills day of ten Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) stations. You have to pass both days at the same attempt. The ADC practical exam is the last stage before registration, and you can apply once you hold a valid initial assessment and a written exam pass from the past five years.

  • 6Tasks on the technical skills day
  • 10OSCE stations on the clinical skills day
  • January to May 2027Exam window for 2027 Period 1
  • Both daysWhat you must pass at one attempt

Who can apply, and how a place is given

To apply in an application period, you need:

  • an initial assessment that’s still valid after the exam date
  • a written exam pass that’s still valid after the exam date (it lasts five years)
  • no practical exam sat, or booked, in the period just before

Eligible candidates get an email when the period opens, with a link in ADC Connect. Two days after it closes, a date selection period opens, where you pick your preferred session. The ADC then confirms the sessions; it doesn’t promise your preferred dates, and you must be free for the whole exam window.

Some periods open in stages. For 2027 Period 1, stage 1 (14 to 18 October 2026) was for candidates whose initial assessment or written pass expired soonest, and stage 2 (19 to 23 October 2026) took the rest, first come, first served. Each period has a waiting list, and places that come up are usually offered at very short notice.

The technical skills day

You complete six tasks on standardised typodont models in manikin heads, mounted on simulation units. A task list at the start of the day gives the tooth numbers, surfaces and a practice tooth. Tasks can come from conservation, endodontics and fixed prosthodontics, for example:

  • preparing a carious tooth
  • restoring a prepared tooth with resin composite
  • preparing or temporising a tooth for an indirect restoration
  • an endodontic procedure

The amalgam task was removed from Period 2, 2026, and the ADC brought in new Platinum range simulation teeth at the same time. There’s a compulsory 45-minute lunch break, and you can take other breaks whenever you like. Working on a manikin in a position that would hurt a real patient gets recorded, and if you keep doing it you can be dismissed.

The clinical skills day

A ten-station OSCE, in a morning or afternoon session. Each station is a room with a task, which may use a simulated patient, a video, a manikin or other resources. You get reading time, then examination time; the ADC’s tips sheet gives ten minutes of examination time at each station. Example tasks from the handbook:

  • taking a history from a simulated patient
  • explaining a diagnosis and management plan
  • managing a medical emergency in a simulated setting
  • taking intra-oral radiographs
  • designing a partial denture or placing rubber dam

How is the ADC practical exam marked?

Examiners rate each task with a global rating (outstanding, pass, borderline, fail or bad fail) and a checklist of criteria scored from 3 (very good) to 0 (unsatisfactory). Observed stations are marked on the day; technical tasks and unobserved stations are marked later by two independent examiners.

A partial compensatory model decides a pass or fail for each day. A strong day can’t make up for a weak one. A critical error, meaning the wrong procedure or the right one on the wrong site, fails that task or station.

Results come in ADC Connect about six weeks after the exam, with a feedback report the same day if you fail a simulation clinic task or, from the start of Period 3, 2026, an OSCE station. A pass never expires: you download your ADC certificate from ADC Connect and apply to the Dental Board of Australia. There’s no limit on attempts, and no credit for tasks passed before.

What to bring on each day

  • Current photo ID issued by a government, with your signature, such as a passport or Australian driver’s licence, on both days
  • Your own protective eyewear; gloves and gowns are provided
  • Magnification aids, if they’re clinically suitable
  • Lunch in clear packaging for the technical skills day
  • Closed-toe shoes suitable for a dental clinic

The ADC supplies every instrument and material, burs included, and you can’t bring your own burs or a bur kit. Phones and smart watches go in a locker for the day, and you can’t leave the centre during a session. The centre’s address is on the ADC Melbourne page.
