Alberta air brake test and the Q endorsement

You take an approved air brake course at a licensed driver training school, pass its practical assessment, then pass the Alberta air brake test at a registry agent. The registry agent adds a Q endorsement to your licence, and you need it to drive any vehicle with air brakes on a Class 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 licence. Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors runs the Air Brake Program, and there’s no road test for the Q.

Who needs a Q endorsement

  • Drivers with a Class 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 licence, before driving a vehicle with air brakes.
  • Anyone applying for a Class 1 licence: the Q comes first.
  • Farm vehicle combinations that need a Class 1 licence. When you apply for that Class 1, you show proof of air brake training even if the vehicle is registered as a farm vehicle.
  • Not needed for a single-motor farm vehicle.

Heavy equipment technicians, heavy-duty equipment mechanics, truck and transport mechanics and commercial vehicle inspection technicians may be able to take the tests without the classroom or practical training. Examinations and Licensing confirms who qualifies.

How to get the Q endorsement

  1. Take the classroom session at a licensed driver training school. It lasts at least 6.5 hours, and every student gets a copy of the Air Brake Manual: A Guide for Students.
  2. Do the practical training: an instructor demonstrates for 15 minutes, then you practise the air brake pre-trip inspection twice.
  3. Pass the practical assessment, one-on-one, using the Air Brake Practical Test form. You get one re-assessment, on a different day, before the school sets more training. A pass earns you a Notice of Air Brake Program Completion.
  4. Take the completion forms to any Alberta registry agent and pass the knowledge test. The Q then appears on your licence card.

You need a valid Alberta driver’s licence to take the knowledge test, and you can’t take it while your licence is suspended.

How does the Alberta air brake test work at a registry agent?

  • It’s 30 multiple-choice questions on a computer, in English only. Paper and translated versions aren’t offered.
  • The test ends automatically once you get 6 questions wrong.
  • There’s no time limit and no limit on how many times you take it.
  • A retest has to be on a different day, and you pay each time.
  • The fee is a $5 government fee plus the registry agent’s service charge, which is capped at $12.60 in the Registry Agent Product Catalogue effective October 1, 2026.

Practice for the Alberta air brake test

The questions come from Alberta’s Air Brake Manual: A Guide for Students, the book your course gives you. For self-test questions, the manuals of other provinces end their chapters with review questions, and the daily air brake check is the same skill your practical assessment covers.

Air brake courses across Alberta

Any school licensed for the Air Brake Program can teach the course. Alberta’s list of licensed driver training schools shows the code Q next to each one that is, with its address, for every region, including Red Deer, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge and Fort McMurray. The licensed school delivers the classroom session, and Alberta.ca doesn’t publish course prices.

Getting a Class 1 licence with the Q

The Q is a step on the way to a Class 1 licence, and Alberta’s Class 1 Learning Pathway adds an air brake course for learners who don’t have it yet.
