Air brake endorsement in each province

An air brake endorsement is a code on your driver’s licence that lets you drive vehicles with air brakes in the class you already hold. Each province issues its own and sets its own tests. Nova Scotia’s needs only the knowledge test, while the others in the table add a practical part or a course, and the code changes from one province to the next.

Air brake endorsement in Saskatchewan, Quebec, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador

  • Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI): you pass a written air brake knowledge test, then a practical demonstration on air brake equipment you provide, without help or a checklist. You book either by calling SGI or, for the written test, online through MySGI.
  • Quebec, Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ): mention F lets you drive a heavy vehicle with air brakes. You can book its theory exam when you book your class exam, and you must pass it before the practical exams.
  • Prince Edward Island Highway Safety: book and pass the written air brake knowledge test, then show your knowledge of the air brake system during the pre-trip inspection of your road test.
  • Newfoundland and Labrador Motor Registration lists an air brake endorsement among the steps for a commercial licence, but its commercial pages don’t describe the air brake tests; ask Motor Registration before you book.
