Nova Scotia air brake test

Nova Scotia’s air brake test is a knowledge test you can take online, on a computer with a webcam, or in person at the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) or Access Nova Scotia. It covers air brake systems and the pre-trip air brake inspection, from Nova Scotia’s Air Brake Manual. Passing doesn’t add the endorsement by itself: you then visit the RMV or Access Nova Scotia to finish.

Who can take the Nova Scotia air brake test

  • You’re 16 or older.
  • You hold a Class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 licence, or a valid licence from outside the country.
  • You have no outstanding fines or privilege reinstatement fees, and your licence isn’t suspended.

How do you take the air brake test in Nova Scotia?

  1. Review the Air Brake Manual.
  2. Fill in the online application form and pay by credit card.
  3. Start the test straight away, or later with the access code from your confirmation email. You can try a sample first to get used to the online testing.

Taking the test online or in person

  • Online, you need an email address and a desktop or laptop with a webcam, which takes photos during the test; phones and tablets can’t be used.
  • The test is in English or French.
  • If your test is flagged for review, results take about a week.
  • To test in person instead, book with the RMV or Access Nova Scotia, and ask the RMV if you need an interpreter or a spoken test.

If you fail, and after you pass

  • Online, you can retake as soon as you’re ready. In person, you wait until at least the next day. Either way you pay again.
  • A pass is valid for 12 months.
  • To get the endorsement, bring your licence to the RMV or Access Nova Scotia and pay the fee to upgrade it.

Air brake practice for the Nova Scotia test

The Air Brake Manual ends each section with summary questions, and its full system diagram is numbered so you can follow each part through the chapters. Its pre-trip chapter gives 20 minutes for the pre-trip air brake inspection on a single unit or an air-over-hydraulic system and 30 minutes on a combination unit, and moving from single to combination vehicles means demonstrating the combination check.

Drivers from outside Canada

If your licence is from a country Nova Scotia doesn’t have a reciprocal agreement with and your road test vehicle has air brakes, you pass the knowledge test before the road test. Without an air brake endorsement on that licence, you also need a 90-day temporary licence from Access Nova Scotia, which needs a Driver’s Medical Examination Report from the past six months.
