MCCQE practice tests from the MCC, and other ways to study

For the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE), the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) makes its own MCCQE practice test material: a free set of 55 questions with answers and rationales, and preparatory exams written the same way as the real one, including a full-length form for $1. It also publishes the MCC Examination Objectives and a study guide. Toronto Notes and commercial question banks are sold separately, and the MCC says you don’t need any particular product.

Free MCCQE practice questions from the MCC

The MCC’s free set has 55 MCC-style questions meant to reflect the MCCQE. You can answer them on its site or download a PDF with the questions, responses, rationales and references.

They’re for personal study and non-commercial use. The MCC also points out that the layout isn’t what you’ll see on exam day, and that some tables load as images that a network firewall can block.

Which MCCQE practice test from the MCC should you buy?

ProductQuestionsPrice
Preparatory Examination, $1 form230$1
Preparatory Examination (PE)230$400
PE-Lite, two forms115 each$250 a form

The MCC says the $1 form and the $400 PE are the same apart from their questions, and the $1 price isn’t time-limited. So the $1 form gives you a full-length practice exam, and the PE and PE-Lite forms are for more unseen questions. No question repeats across these four forms or the 55 free questions, which gives you up to 745 questions in all.

Each form comes with correct answers, rationales and references, in timed or self-paced mode, for 6 months. You can take a form only once. Your result is a raw score, which the MCC says has no link to the MCCQE score scale, and test accommodations aren’t available on these products. The MCC’s fee page says it processes payments in Canadian dollars.

Toronto Notes, question banks and other paid resources

The MCC doesn’t require you to use or buy any specific material. It publishes a list of reference books its test committees may use to check questions, such as Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine and Bates’ Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking.

Toronto Notes is written and revised every year by University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine students, staff and faculty, and its seller, the U of T Bookstore, calls it a review for the MCCQE. The bookstore lists the 2026‑2027 print bundle at $244.95 and the eBook bundle at $150.95. The eBooks are on the Kortext platform, not PDF files, and every sale is final.

The MCC says commercial question banks and courses aren’t endorsed by it, and that the people who write its exams don’t create them. Whatever you use, the MCC forbids sharing MCCQE content in any way, even from memory.

A study path built on the MCC’s own material

  1. Read the MCC Examination Objectives for each role, and allow plenty of time for the medical expert role, as it has the largest number of objectives.
  2. Use the MCC’s study guide, Study smarter, to map each objective to the exam blueprint. Its sample plan has 180 study sessions spread evenly over six disciplines.
  3. Spend about a third of your time on multiple-choice questions, as that plan does, and two thirds on content.
  4. Use the 55 free questions to see the MCC’s question style, with the MCC’s list of normal lab values to hand.
  5. Sit a preparatory exam in timed mode to get used to the two 115-question sections and the exam’s tools, such as flagging and highlighting.

The MCC also suggests a study group, where each member presents patient problems they know well and the others question them on diagnosis and management.
