Driver’s abstract in NL: your driving record

A driver’s abstract is a copy of your driving record, which Motor Registration also calls a driver record. In Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), you can get your driver’s abstract online through MyGovNL, or apply with a form and send it to a Motor Registration office.

  • $15Driver’s abstract fee, $10 for seniors
  • 12Points that suspend a full licence
  • 3 business daysProcessing time for a request by form

How do you get a driver’s abstract in NL?

There are two ways:

  • Online: sign in to MyGovNL, where you pay and get your record
  • By form: fill in the driver record request form. With a card payment, email it to Motor Registration or fax it to any office. With a cheque or money order, mail it or use an office’s drop box

Card payments go on Motor Registration’s credit card authorization form, and cheques and money orders are made out to the Newfoundland Exchequer.

Ordering someone else’s abstract

An employer, or anyone else, can request an abstract for another person, but the request needs that person’s written permission.

Demerit points on your record

Points go on your record when you’re convicted of a driving offence, in Newfoundland and Labrador or anywhere else in Canada, and you can check your total on MyGovNL. On a full licence, Motor Registration warns you in writing at 6 points and again at 9. A suspension comes when the points add up within a 2-year period. Under the provincial regulations, it lasts at least 2 months the first time and at least 4 months after that, on a novice licence too.

To get your licence back, you wait out the whole suspension, complete the Responsible Drivers Workshop and pay the $200 reinstatement fee. Driving while suspended adds another 4 months the first time, and 9 for a repeat within 5 years.
