Motorcycle licence in NL: from Class 6I to Class 6

Class 6, the motorcycle licence, has the same two graduated levels as a car licence in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). You need to be 16 or older. Three tests, for balance, knowledge and vision, start your motorcycle licence in NL at Class 6I, the learner level, and a road test in traffic comes later.

  • 80 km/hHighest posted limit a learner may ride on
  • 3 monthsLearner wait if you hold a full licence
  • 12 monthsLearner wait on a first licence

How do you get a motorcycle licence in NL?

You can take the three tests for a learner’s motorcycle licence in any order, and Class 6I isn’t issued until you’ve passed all of them:

  • A written test on safe riding, rules of the road, traffic signs and signals, and licensing. Book it online. The handbook says you can take it at any driver examination centre, and the questions come from the handbook and the Highway Traffic Act
  • A balance test on a pylon course. A motorcycle training course waives it, if you bring proof
  • A vision test

An approved motorcycle course cuts the wait to 8 months on a first licence, or 1 month if you already hold a full licence. Then a road test moves you to Class 6II.

The balance test

Wear clothing that covers your whole body, reflective if you can, an approved helmet and eye protection, and carry proof of insurance and registration. The motorcycle has to be free of defects and pass an inspection. You’ll be asked to:

  • Name the motorcycle’s major and minor controls
  • Start and shut down the engine
  • Shift up and down while riding
  • Weave through a pylon course
  • Ride as slowly as you can in a straight line through pylons
  • Stop as quickly as you can without skidding the wheels

Class 6I learner rules

As a learner rider, you must:

  • Ride with an accompanying driver who has 4 years’ experience as a full Class 6 driver, on another motorcycle or in a vehicle
  • Keep your blood alcohol content at zero, and so must your accompanying driver
  • Carry no passengers
  • Stay off the road after dark, from half an hour before sunset to half an hour after sunrise
  • Stay out of the commercial classes

The motorcycle road test

It takes about 30 minutes. It starts with a check of your equipment and the motorcycle, then the examiner watches how you follow the rules of the road, signal, turn and judge intersections, and how you handle balance, road position and speed. Bring:

  • Proof of insurance
  • A copy of a valid vehicle registration
  • Your valid permit
  • A motorcycle in good working condition
  • Your road test payment receipt from MyGovNL

Afterwards, the examiner explains your results: what went well and what needs more work.

Class 6II and the full licence

For your 12 months as a novice rider, you must:

  • Keep your blood alcohol content at zero
  • Stay off the road from midnight to 5 a.m.
  • Stay out of the commercial classes

After those 12 months, you get a full Class 6 licence. If you already drive a car, your card shows a Class 5 licence endorsed for Class 6.
