The NL Driver’s Handbook for your written test

Motor Registration gives you one book to study for the written test in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL): the Driver’s Handbook, a free PDF. Its New Drivers page lists it as “Driver’s Handbook (formerly Road User Guide)”, so you’ll see both names. The handbook says the test questions are based on it and on the Highway Traffic Act and its regulations.

  • 6Chapters in the handbook
  • 166Pages in the PDF
  • Pages 64 to 80Pages on signs and pavement markings

Where can you get the NL driver’s handbook?

Download it from Motor Registration’s Driver’s Handbook page, which says the copy is free. The licence application steps link the same PDF, and so do the road test pages, for what counts as a vehicle in good working condition.

What each chapter covers

Here’s what’s in each chapter, with the page it starts on:

  • Licensing and Registration, page 1: licence classes, graduated licensing, the written and road tests, and renewing your licence
  • Road Safety, page 27: seatbelts, speeding, impaired and distracted driving, fatigue, vehicle care and emergencies
  • Traffic Signs and Pavement Markings, page 64: sign shapes and colours, traffic lights and road markings
  • Rules of the Road, page 81: right of way, turns, lanes, parking, following distance and sharing the road
  • Motorcycle Safety, page 136: riding skills and the motorcycle balance test
  • Information for Commercial Drivers, page 155: the commercial licence classes, the commercial road test and the National Safety Code

The handbook says the Class 5 test covers the three subjects on the overview “and more”, so read beyond the signs.

Where the handbook and the web pages differ

Proof of identity is set out differently. The handbook sorts ID into primary and secondary documents. Motor Registration’s Identification Documentation page uses its own test instead, and that’s the page the licence application steps link to, so go by it. The overview’s list of what to bring follows that page.
