Ontario · G1 test

How much does the G1 test cost?

You pay $159.75 when you apply, as of October 2026. It sounds like a lot for a written test, but it isn’t just the test. That one payment also covers your first road test (the G2) and a five-year licence. If you fail and need another go, each extra attempt is $16.00.

The fees that apply to new drivers

WhatFeeWhen you pay it

All DriveTest fees include tax. The Government of Ontario sets them, and this fee list has been in effect since July 12, 2019.

What the $159.75 covers

The G road test isn’t included. You’ll pay for that one separately when you get there.

  • The G1 knowledge test
  • Your G2 road test, when you’re ready to take it
  • A five-year licence

How you can pay

DriveTest takes cash, debit, Visa or Mastercard credit cards, certified cheques, bank drafts, money orders and traveller’s cheques. Make cheques and money orders payable to Serco Canada Inc.

Optional costs

The handbook is free to read on ontario.ca. A printed copy costs $18.00 at a DriveTest Centre (cash only), while ontario.ca lists it at $14.95 plus tax from other sellers.

A ministry-approved beginner driver education course is optional too. Schools set their own prices. The payoff is that you can take your G2 road test after 8 months instead of 12.
