What’s official and what isn’t
DriveTest says the G1 test has two sections, one on signs and one on rules of the road, and that you pass with a total of 80% or more. That’s it. The 40-question count comes from people who’ve sat the test, and the reports are consistent, but you won’t find it on drivetest.ca or ontario.ca.
You’ll also read that you need 16 out of 20 in each section. That isn’t stated officially either. There is a hint it’s true, though. DriveTest says that if you retry, you only redo the sections that didn’t meet the standard. So treat each section as its own test and aim for 16 or more in both.
How many can you get wrong?
| If the test is | 80% means | Most you can miss |
|---|---|---|
| 40 questions in total | 32 right | 8 |
| 20 sign questions | 16 right | 4 |
| 20 rules questions | 16 right | 4 |
Play it safe. Being strong on rules won’t rescue a weak signs section if each section is checked on its own.
What the questions look like
Every question is multiple choice. The official sample questions in the handbook each have four options and one right answer.
The rules section can cover seatbelts, headlights, speed limits, freeways, school buses and streetcars, emergency vehicles, passing, sharing the road, reporting collisions, demerit points and licence suspensions.
Is there a time limit?
No. The test isn’t timed, and you can take as long as you need until the centre closes. DriveTest says it usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. Arrive at least an hour before closing so you’re not rushed.
You get your result straight away
The test is marked on the spot, so you’ll know before you leave. Pass, and you walk out with a paper temporary licence that’s good for 90 days. Your plastic card comes later.
