Where you can take the real test
Some DriveTest Centres let you take the test on a computer instead of paper. That’s still in person, in a supervised test room. Every centre has the paper version.
- Any DriveTest Centre, with no appointment. Arrive at least an hour before closing.
- ServiceOntario at Bay and College in downtown Toronto, by appointment only.
Free G1 practice you can do online
This is the part that works well online. Start with the official material, then add practice tests.
- The Official MTO Driver’s Handbook, free to read on ontario.ca
- Eight official sample questions with answers, at the end of the handbook
- Our free 20-question practice test, with 10 sign questions and 10 rules questions
Watch out for sites that sell an “online G1”
Plenty of sites call their practice tests an “online G1 test”. They can help you prepare, but none of them gives you a licence. Only DriveTest, on behalf of the Ministry of Transportation, can. If a site asks you to pay to take the G1 online for real, skip it.
What does happen online
Once you have your G1, you can book your G2 road test online at drivetest.ca. That’s the first part of getting licensed that you can do from home.
