AP Exam format and length, subject by subject

Most AP Exams take 2 to 3 hours 15 minutes and come in two parts: multiple choice, then free response, where you write essays or work through problems. The AP Exam format changes a lot from subject to subject, though. Language exams add speaking, and a few courses, like Art and Design and AP Research, have no sit-down exam at all.

What’s the AP Exam format?

Almost every exam has a multiple-choice section and a free-response section. How much each counts depends on the subject: half and half on Biology and Calculus, two thirds multiple choice on Psychology and the economics exams.

Most exams are fully digital in the Bluebook app. On hybrid ones, like Calculus, Biology and Chemistry, you answer multiple choice in Bluebook and write free-response answers in a paper booklet. The tables show each exam as of October 2026, from College Board’s course pages.

In 2027, the Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish Language and Culture exams put free response first, in Section I, and multiple choice second, in Section II. The free response is built around a project you prepare during the year, and its Personalized Project Reference is due April 30, 2027.

Courses without a single sit-down exam

For these, the work you hand in during the year matters as much as exam day, so keep an eye on the deadlines.

  • AP Seminar: two performance tasks during the year (55%), due April 30, plus a 2-hour exam with 3 short answers and 1 essay (45%).
  • AP Research: no exam. A 4,000-5,000 word paper (75%) and a 15-20 minute presentation and oral defense (25%), due April 30.
  • AP Drawing, 2-D Art and Design and 3-D Art and Design: a portfolio, due May 7. In Drawing, that’s a Sustained Investigation of 15 images (60%) and Selected Works, 5 pieces (40%).
  • AP Computer Science Principles: the Create performance task counts for 30%, alongside the exam in the table above.

How long are AP Exams?

The shortest written exams are Chinese and Japanese, at about 2 hours, and the AP Seminar exam, at 2 hours. The longest are US, World and European History, English Language and Chemistry, at 3 hours 15 minutes. Many others are 3 hours, with a 10-minute break.

AP Business with Personal Finance and AP Cybersecurity are new Career Kickstart courses with exams on May 4 and May 5, 2027. Check their course pages for the format.
