AP Exam registration and the November 13 deadline

Your school has to order your exams by November 13, 2026, and that’s the AP Exam registration deadline that counts. You sign up by joining your class or an exam-only section in My AP. After November 13, exams can still be ordered until March 12, 2027, but each one costs $40 more.

How to sign up for AP Exams

  1. Get a join code from your AP teacher. If you’re not taking the class, or you’re testing at another school, get an exam-only join code from that school’s AP coordinator.
  2. Sign in to My AP with your College Board account and choose Join a Course or Exam.
  3. If you see a Register for the Exam button, select it. That tells your coordinator to order your exam. No button means you’re registered automatically.
  4. Pay your school by its deadline. The school orders exams by November 13.
  5. Your coordinator tells you where and when to report on exam day.

What happens after the AP Exam registration deadline?

From November 14 to March 12, your coordinator can still order an exam, with a $40 late fee per exam. That fee doesn’t apply to courses that start after November 13 or to students who transfer in. After March 12, exams can’t be ordered.

If you decide after November 13 not to take an exam that was ordered for you, you’re charged $40 instead of the full fee, even with a fee reduction. Tell your coordinator early. Ordering itself is your AP coordinator’s job, so ask them if you’re not sure your exam is on the list.

Homeschooled, self-studying or at a school without AP?

You need a school that gives AP Exams to test you. Contact AP coordinators at nearby schools early in the school year, and ask AP Services for Students for contact details if you get stuck.

If a coordinator agrees, they set up an exam-only section and give you its join code. You then follow the same steps as everyone else, and you take the exam at that school.

Where you take the exam

At your own school, or at the school that gave you an exam-only join code. Your AP coordinator tells you the room and the time, and you bring your own device with Bluebook unless the school provides one.

Need testing accommodations?

Ask your school’s SSD coordinator early. They request accommodations through College Board’s SSD Online, and the deadline for the 2027 exams is Friday, January 22, 2027. Families can also send a paper form with documentation without going through the school.

Accommodations include extended time, extra breaks, large print or braille, a reader or a scribe, and a computer for written answers. Approval usually carries over to the SAT and PSAT too, until a year after you finish high school. Your coordinator still has to include them in the exam order, and you bring your SSD decision letter to every exam. Testing with accommodations that weren’t approved gets your scores canceled.
