How does Hawaii driver's license renewal work?
On Oahu, Honolulu's steps are:
- Book an AlohaQ appointment at a driver licensing center, or at the Downtown, Hawaii Kai, Pearlridge or Windward City satellite city hall if you're a U.S. citizen or green card holder.
- Fill in the application form.
- Bring your documents. If you've already given REAL ID documents, they're usually needed again only for a name or address change, but Honolulu asks you to bring them anyway.
- Pass the eye screening, give your fingerprint, pay the fee and have your photo taken.
- Drive on the paper temporary license until the card arrives by mail, within about five weeks.
On Kauai you renew at the county's Motor Vehicle and Licensing office with the application, documents from its REAL ID list and an eye test. The fee is the same as for a new license of your age, shown on the driver's license page.
Can you renew a Hawaii driver's license online or by mail?
Neither county's renewal page offers online renewal. The manual says you may renew once by mail but must appear in person every other renewal, and the state DOT adds that a new photo is needed at least every 16 years. Drivers with temporary legal presence renew in person every time.
If you're out of state, both counties take a signed letter by mail or email and send you a renewal packet. Honolulu won't mail a REAL ID license out of state; it converts it to a limited purpose license. We haven't confirmed Hawaii County's or Maui County's renewal options, so call your county office before you go.
If your license has expired
Stop driving: a Hawaii license is void after its expiration date. Honolulu and Kauai both let you renew within 90 days without a penalty. After that, a $5 reactivation fee is added for each 30 days, on top of the license fee, and you can still reactivate up to one year after expiry. Past one year you apply as a new driver, with the written and road tests.
If you were deployed outside the U.S. with the military, an expired Hawaii license stays valid with your military ID while you're away and for 90 days after you return. Bring your deployment papers when you renew.
Renewing an instruction permit
A permit lasts a year. On Oahu, renew it in person no sooner than 30 days before it expires and no later than 90 days after, and you won't retake the written test; it costs $5, and there's no limit on how many times you renew. If a teen renews 31 to 90 days late, road test eligibility moves to 180 days after the new permit is issued. Permits can't be renewed by mail.
Kupuna licenses for drivers 72 and older
Older drivers renew for shorter terms. On Oahu, drivers 72 and older without conditions that could impair their driving can renew for four years, though Honolulu's pages put the top of that range at 79 on one page and 80 on another. Drivers 80 and older renew for two years. Anyone 72 or older with an impairing condition may be asked for a DOT-H2058 Medical Report.
