Your Hawaii state ID application: documents, fees, renewal

You apply in person at a driver licensing office, with originals or certified copies of your documents. County licensing offices issue the State of Hawaii ID card, and on Oahu a first card must come from a driver licensing center, not a satellite city hall. Fill in the Hawaii state ID application form before you go and book ahead. As of October 2026 the card costs $40 on Oahu, where it's good for eight years, and $32 on Kauai.

What do you need for a Hawaii state ID application?

Bring originals or certified copies proving:

  • Your legal name, plus papers linking any earlier names
  • Your date of birth
  • Your legal presence in the U.S.
  • Your principal residence in Hawaii, with two documents
  • Your Social Security number, which Kauai lists and Honolulu has made optional since June 18, 2021

Honolulu doesn't accept notarized copies or faxes. If the ID is for a child under 14, a parent or guardian applies. On Oahu, a teen without address documents can use a Proof of Hawaii Residence Affidavit, form CS-L (DL) 242, from an adult they live with.

Making a Hawaii state ID appointment

On Oahu, book on AlohaQ at a driver licensing center, which handles every state ID service. Renewals and duplicates can also be done at the Downtown, Hawaii Kai, Pearlridge and Windward City satellite city halls, for U.S. citizens and green card holders. Honolulu allows one transaction per appointment slot, so book a second slot if you also need a license service. On Kauai, use the DMV's appointment page; our booking page covers Oahu and Kauai, plus the numbers for Hawaii and Maui counties.

State ID fees

Fees as of October 2026. On Oahu you leave with a paper temporary ID, which isn't accepted for travel, and the card arrives by mail in 4 to 5 weeks.

Renewing a Hawaii state ID

You can renew up to six months before it expires, and both Honolulu and Kauai say so. On Oahu you renew in person, at a driver licensing center or one of the four satellite city halls above; there's no online renewal. Honolulu says renewal by mail is only for U.S. citizens and permanent residents aged 80 or older who have already submitted REAL ID documents, and that if the card expires, you have 365 days to renew it before you're treated as a new applicant.

One REAL ID card per person

You may hold only one REAL ID card. If you make your state ID your REAL ID card, Honolulu says your license or permit becomes limited purpose at its next renewal or duplicate. The state ID is voluntary, and Honolulu notes it's mostly for people who don't have a driver's license.
