ISEE test questions to practice, with explanations

Here are 20 free ISEE test questions we wrote, in the style of the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) at the Middle and Upper Levels, with two analogies like the ones on the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT). Each has four choices, as every ISEE multiple-choice question does, and a short explanation. The real Middle and Upper Level ISEE has 161 questions, so this is a quick skills check, not a full practice test.

Question 1 of 20

Which word is closest in meaning to BENEVOLENT?

20 practice questions in the style of the test.

How to use these 20 questions

Questions 1 to 5 are ISEE Verbal Reasoning (synonyms and sentence completions), and 6 and 7 are SSAT analogies. Then come 4 Reading Comprehension questions on one passage, 4 Quantitative Reasoning questions (an ordering problem, a number pattern and two quantitative comparisons) and 5 Mathematics Achievement questions.

Work without a calculator, as on test day. Aim for 15 right, which is 75%. That’s our own target: neither test has a pass mark, and each school decides how it uses scores.

Where can you find more ISEE questions?

E3n has a free online sample test for every ISEE level, and ERB’s What to Expect on the ISEE guides each hold a full practice test with answer keys. For the SSAT, E3n has a free 30-question Mini-Practice Test. Those come from the test makers, and our 20 don’t.
