The legal driving age in Kansas

You can start at 14. That's the legal driving age in Kansas for an instruction permit, or for a farm permit if you live or work on a farm, and a restricted license can follow at 15. The limits ease at 16, and at 17 you can get an unrestricted license. KDOR calls this the graduated driver's license system.

The 50 hours of supervised driving

A parent or guardian signs an affidavit saying you've driven at least 50 hours with an adult who is 21 or older. KDOR's teen driving FAQ and the handbook both say 10 of those hours must be at night. The office keeps the affidavit but doesn't ask for a log, though KDOR encourages parents to keep one.

At 15 you need only 25 hours for a restricted license, then a second affidavit for the rest before you move to the 16-year-old rules.

Kansas teen driving laws on phones and violations

With a permit before 17, a farm permit or a restricted license, you may not use a wireless device while driving except to report illegal activity or call for emergency help. KDOR's graduated license page lists no phone limit for a permit held at 17 or older, but the handbook's permit rules ban wireless devices for every permit holder, so follow the handbook's rule.

Tickets slow you down. KDOR's teen FAQ says two or more moving violations on separate occasions before 16 keep your license restricted until 17, and that carrying non-sibling passengers you're not allowed to has counted as a moving violation since July 1, 1999.

When the teen limits end

KDOR's graduated license page ends the teen limits after six months at the 16-year-old stage or at 17, whichever comes first. The handbook ends them once you're 16 and have held the license for six months.
