How many questions are on the Kansas permit test

There are 25, all multiple choice. Section 11 of the Kansas Driving Handbook says they cover traffic signs, pavement markings, Kansas laws and driving practices, and you need 80%, or 20 right, to pass. There's no time limit for the questions on the Kansas permit test.

What the 25 questions cover

The handbook says the questions are based on what's in it, and Section 1 adds that you'll identify certain signs by their shape, color or symbol. So expect a mix of law questions, such as speed limits and who yields, and sign questions that show you a sign and ask what it means.

How many questions on the Kansas permit test can you miss?

Five. With 80% needed, 20 right out of 25 is a pass, and 19 isn't. The test isn't timed, and the handbook says it generally takes 15 to 20 minutes, so you have room to read each question twice.

Questions on the driving test

The driving test has no question count. It's scored on what you do: a vehicle check, control exercises such as parallel parking, and a drive. The handbook says the examiner may also ask you to name road signs you pass along the way.

Retakes and what they cost

You get four tries at the written test. KDOR's fee chart (updated May 2023) says a first exam costs $3 and a re-exam within six months costs $1.50. After a fourth failure, the handbook says you wait at least six months from the last failed exam. If you come back more than six months after your last exam, the chart charges a $3 abandonment fee instead of the $1.50.
