How much is the permit test in MA?

It’s $30 for each try at the permit test in MA. The Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) charges that learner’s permit exam fee again if you fail, and again if your permit expires and you test again. The road test and the license have fees of their own, and you can pay those ahead online.

  • $30Permit exam fee, each try
  • $35Road test fee, each try
  • $50Class D or Class M license fee

How much are RMV fees for the permit test in MA and after?

The Driver’s Manual and the RMV’s pages list these fees:

ItemFee
Permit exam fee, each try$30
Road test fee, each try$35
Class D or Class M license fee$50
Duplicate or amended license$25
Out-of-state Class D conversion$115
Out-of-state permit conversion$30
Printed Driver’s Manual$5
Commercial endorsement, same day$10
Commercial endorsement, another day$30

A license issued for less than 5 years is prorated, and adding Class M to another license costs $3 a year. Disabled veterans with disabled veteran plates, or who qualify for them, pay no license fees. A commercial learner’s permit costs $30 too, plus the endorsement fees in the table. The manual notes that fees can change at any time and license fees aren’t refunded.

When you pay the road test fee again

You’re charged for a road test if you:

  • Fail the test
  • Are unprepared, or your car fails the examiner’s inspection
  • Don’t bring a qualified sponsor
  • Are late or don’t show up
  • Cancel or reschedule with less than 72 hours’ notice

If the examiner can’t reach your car’s parking brake, the test doesn’t go ahead and you aren’t charged.

Paying ahead and paying at a Service Center

You can prepay the road test and license fees when you schedule the test, or later with the Pay My Road Test and/or License Fees service on myRMV. The road test page explains what happens after you pass. At a Service Center you can pay by cash, check, money order, credit card or debit card, but methods vary by site, so check before you go.

Costs set by others

Driving schools set their own prices for driver’s education, and rider education schools set theirs for motorcycle courses. Neither the RMV’s driver education page nor its rider education page lists course prices, so ask each school for its prices and its refund and cancellation policies, as the RMV suggests when you compare driver’s ed programs.
