The Massachusetts learner’s permit and its rules

A Class D learner’s permit from the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) lets you practice driving with a qualified driver beside you. To get the Massachusetts learner’s permit, you apply, pass a vision screening and pass the permit exam. Under 18, a parent or guardian also signs your application.

  • 16Youngest age to apply for a permit
  • 20/40Vision in your better eye, glasses allowed
  • Midnight to 5 a.m.Hours under-18s drive only with a parent

Who can get a learner’s permit in Massachusetts?

Besides meeting the minimum age, the RMV’s permit page says you must:

  • Be a Massachusetts resident
  • Not hold a driver’s license or learner’s permit from any other state
  • Be clear of outstanding obligations to any state
  • Meet the RMV’s medical standards for a Class D or Class M license

Under 18, written consent comes from a parent, a legal guardian, the Department of Children and Families or a boarding school headmaster, who signs the application. If the person signing isn’t a parent, they show proof of their authority at the exam.

The vision standard

Besides distance vision, the RMV’s medical standards ask for a combined side-to-side field of vision of at least 120 degrees, the ability to tell red, green and amber apart, and no double vision that can’t be corrected. With 20/50 to 20/70 vision, you may qualify for a license limited to daylight driving.

Massachusetts permit rules for driving

With a Class D permit, the Driver’s Manual says you:

  • Drive only with a licensed driver in the seat beside you who’s at least 21, holds a valid license from Massachusetts or another state and has at least one year of driving experience
  • Carry the permit whenever you drive
  • Drive in another state only if that state’s law allows it

In those night hours, the parent or guardian with you must also hold a valid license that isn’t suspended or revoked, with at least one year of experience. Breaking these rules under 18 brings a permit suspension, and the fines page lists the lengths and reinstatement fees. A motorcycle permit has its own limits.

Applying for the permit

At your appointment you choose a REAL ID or a Standard credential. A REAL ID has a star in the top right corner and needs different documents; the overview lists them.

The permit itself isn’t meant as travel ID: the Driver’s Manual says it won’t be accepted by most airlines and cruise ships as a state-issued photo ID.

When the permit expires

A permit lasts 2 years, or for the length of your stay in the U.S. if that’s shorter, and it can’t be renewed. Once it expires, you complete the application again and retake the exam. The RMV’s scheduling page also warns that driving is unlawful if your permit expires before you have a temporary license, so book your road test well before the end date.
