Is there an official Massachusetts RMV practice test?
Yes. The RMV’s First Time Driver guide has a link to practice taking your learner’s permit exam, which opens in myRMV. Use it to check what you know, then look up anything you miss in the manual.
A study plan for the learner’s permit exam
Seven steps, built around what the RMV says the exam covers:
- Read chapter 1 of the Driver’s Manual for the permit and Junior Operator License (JOL) rules.
- Give extra time to chapter 3, Keeping Your License. Its charts cover suspensions, alcohol and drugs, and JOL violations, all exam topics.
- Learn the sign colors in chapter 4, then the signs one by one.
- Read the parts on pedestrians, bicyclists and other vulnerable road users, because sharing the road is on the exam.
- Write down the numbers: speed limits, following distances, parking distances and the blood alcohol limits.
- Take the RMV’s practice exam and look up each question you miss.
- Try our 20 practice questions as a second check.
Choosing an app or website
Pick one written for Massachusetts, so the questions follow the Driver’s Manual and not another state’s rules. A quick check is whether its practice exam matches the RMV’s real format, set out on the overview.
The Driver’s Manual also warns that some look-alike websites claim to offer RMV services and may charge extra fees, so do your RMV business on mass.gov.
Learning with a parent or a driving school
Under 18, a driver education course is part of getting your license. The table shows where to take one, and the Class D license page explains the kinds of course, driver skills development programs included. If you have a problem with a driving school, you can complain to the RMV in writing.
For the supervised driving hours, the RMV points parents to the Parent’s Supervised Driving Program. Its free RoadReady app logs each drive and makes a state-approved log.
Motorcycle and commercial permit practice
The Class M exam is studied from the RMV’s Motorcycle Manual, and commercial permit exams from its Commercial Driver’s License Manual.
