What should you ask a tester before paying for a road test in Michigan?
Before you book, the Driving Skills Test Study Guide says to ask the tester about every fee:
- The first test and any retests
- Refunds
- Charges for improper documents or a defective car
- Charges for missing a test appointment
Each approved tester must publish a printed fee and refund policy, and give you a receipt when you pay. If you were tested improperly and must test again, the tester is liable for the cost of the retest.
Secretary of State fees
The SOS lists these fees for first-time drivers:
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| Knowledge test, at the office | Free |
| Temporary instruction permit | $25 |
| Level 1 learner’s license | $25 |
| Standard driver’s license | $25 |
| Enhanced driver’s license | $45 |
| Level 3 full license | Free |
Taking the knowledge test online adds a $6.50 convenience fee. A REAL ID costs nothing extra when you renew, but at any other time a duplicate card fee is due, and renewing after your license expires adds a late fee.
Costs set by others
Driver education providers set their own course prices, and the SOS’s pages don’t list them. Ask each provider for its price before you enroll.
