What does Michigan drivers ed Segment 1 include?
Besides the classroom hours, Segment 1 has at least:
- 6 hours behind the wheel with an instructor, at least 3 of them before the classroom part ends, no more than an hour a day, and the rest within three weeks after classes end
- 4 hours of observation in a training vehicle
Classes run no more than two hours a day, over three weeks or more, and you have at least four classroom hours before you drive.
Is there a Segment 1 practice test?
Segment 1 ends with a state exam, and passing it is part of finishing the course and getting your Segment 1 Certificate of Completion. The Secretary of State’s (SOS’s) pages give the passing score but list no practice exam for it, so ask your provider how the course prepares you.
Choosing a Segment 1 course
Your provider must be certified by the Michigan Department of State. The SOS’s teen page links its search for certified providers, and the where-to-learn page covers online courses and certified teachers.
The Parent Driving Permit
While you’re enrolled in Segment 1, your provider can issue an optional Parent Driving Permit. With it, you may drive only with a licensed parent or guardian.
After Segment 1
With your certificate, you can apply for your Level 1 license at an SOS office from 14 years and 9 months, with your parent or guardian.
